Before you can race you will need to get a licence from the ACU, here we will take you through step by step the process. You can download the latest licence form from www.acu.org.uk or contact them and ask them to post one out to you.

As a first time holder you will need a ‘Novice’ or an ‘Intermediate Novice’ licence, the difference being an ‘Intermediate Novice’ can prove his competence on a motorbike with his DVLA Motorbike Licence. Without this you need to prove your competence, we will discuss this later.

Before returning your completed form you will need:

To have attended the ACU Training Course

Don’t panic !!

The course is very easy; I haven’t heard of anyone failing and its classroom based. The course covers the stuff you should really know before going on track. For example what the flags mean and how you should react to them. Scruitnering and what your bike needs doing. After the classroom lecture you will have a multiple choice exam, then given proof of attendance.

Passed a recent eye test.

You will need to take and pass a eye test, the optician will need to sign the application form. Wearing glasses or suffering from colour blindness wont necessary stop you racing.

Belong to a club.

The Acu will only accept your application if it has been signed by a club. You need to decide the club you will be racing with and join that club. You can normally do this at the same time you post your application to the club secretary. She will then sign the form and post this on to the ACU (assuming you have included the stamped envelope).

Proof of riding ability

If you have a DVLA motorcycle licence a photocopy of this will suffice, making you an ‘Intermediate Novice’ If you are to young or simply don’t have a licence you will then need to provide prove you can ride. There are several track schools that can do this.

Once posted off sit back and wait for the postman to turn up, don’t worry it becomes a lot easier next year.
